My personal animated cartoon...
I was asked an interesting question tonight... "What would you do if you had a full cast and crew that was famous for animated series?"
Now... in all honesty I don't think I've ever really given that topic much thought, so I thought back to all my favorite animated series... and I decided I wanted to create a large vibrant world... or at least give the illusion of one.
And I thought that... A beautiful gleaming city, reflecting the dawning sun, rising out of the dirt of history and blight of age that reached deep into the crust of the earth would make a good setting... but I needed a hero. I've always been a fan of those movies and series that follow a small time character in the midst of a massive and complex story, but movies are too short and series often have to get the main character involved in a major way just to keep the story going, so I decided that 13 episodes would be just enough...
But to the main character... I decided on a dog. More specifically, an Australian Shepherd. One of the last of its kind, it was sold with its pedigree to a wealthy family who lived among the upper echelon of society. The puppy was given to the Wealthy Man's daughter for her to play with as there aren't many children in their section. We follow the puppy as he grows to about a year old, over the course of one or two episodes, maybe three they age, and so does the rebellion. We hear of the rebellion through convenient tv and newspaper shots, so the audience isn't unaware, but how does it affect this family? Suicide bombing. The dog is left without a home and is placed into a pound.
A young woman enters the pound looking for a guard dog and companion, she sees him and falls in love with his mismatched eyes. Taking him home she feeds him and shows him around, letting him grow comfortable. This story arc is a sad one, in which she fights with her current boyfriend... The fights grow violent, until he is about to hurt her when the dog leaps at him. The boyfriend pulls out a gun, but she throws herself in front of the dog... a bit cliche perhaps... but the dog leaps at the man and rips out his throat, but a wild swing of his arm sends the dog sailing out the window down several stories to land in a trash heap amongst some of the poor.
The dog is now limping when a group of kids come across him. He's scared and growls, but one of the children offers up a bit of bread. The dog hungrily devours it... the next few days the kid and the dog grow closer. They start spending their evenings together, and the dog finally recovers from the leg wound. It becomes dark one night and the kid and the dog are walking along the street when one or two ruffians round on them. The dog growls and bites at one of them, sending the other running. The ruffians freak and leave the two alone... The kid takes the dog home, but to their dismay, the parents point out that they can't afford to keep the dog, but after the story they say he can keep him until he is found a good home.
Posters are put up until a man comes by offering to take the dog. The parents give the dog away, amidst one or two tears from the boy. It turns out however that the man only took the dog to kill him for food to be sold for money for drugs. The dog manages to escape by biting the man's hand, but rather than running back to the boy's family, the dog has lost all faith in humanity... and as such... he leaves the city... The ending draws to a close with the dog giving one final look back at the city... and turning away.
Anywho, that's just an idea that I had off the top of my head... but .. at the very least I've learned to give a bit more thought to what it is I'd like to be able to do...
